Budget Cuts

To my fellow Greek Brothers and Sisters,

I am sure you are all aware from the media and other emails you've received that the budget crisis affecting our University is serious and will impact every aspect of our educational experience to some degree.

One are that will see some of the biggest reductions is Greek Life. Effective July 1, 2009, the Office of Greek Life will be eliminated, leaving our Greek community in a challenging and difficult situation. I can promise that Cody Wagner and I will be doing everything we possibly can to make this a prepared and successful transition.

What I ask from each one of you is to have faith in the power of our community bonds that we will emerge from this crisis stronger than before. We will face tough situations and will need to rely on one another to get through these hard time.

Your IFC and Panhellenic officers will attempt to lessen the effects of these cuts as best we can. Cody and I will be sure to keep each of your organizations updated over the summer and in the fall.

Please write your ASUN elected officers and the University administration. We need our voices heard during this time more than ever before. Feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

Sincerely,
Allison Brown
Panhellenic President

Shout outs!

So, it is the first official day of recruitment for both sororities and fraternities on campus. Students have been enthusiastic about the [g] movement and we can tell by the numbers. During freshmen orientation, sororities hit the 100 mark and fraternities reached 90. But since then, the numbers for women going through recruitment have reached a total of 255. And, 220 men are interested in the fraternity system. Can I say WOW! We have not had this many people going through recruitment in years. It's about time though.

I also want to make a shout out to the Panhellenic recruitment gang, including the Rho Gammas. They have worked so hard and it is finally paying off. Also, great job IFC!! You have impressed the entire Greek community this year. We can't wait to see what's in store for the upcoming year!

Go [g] movement!

The [g] is moving...

It's been a week of breakthroughs for Greek life and for the movement, and it's only just begun!!! After a stellar Dorm Storm, the movement is beginning to see bigger numbers than it has ever before. More than 100 women have signed up to go through sorority recruitment, up 50% from this time last year. Also, yesterday's IFC house tours saw more than 90 men go through.

With this kind of momentum and numbers, the [g] movement is poised to change the University of Nevada campus forever!

Comments & Questions

Feel free to ask anything about recruitment, sororities & fraternities at the University of Nevada, Reno.

My [g] movement experience

I never thought I would join the movement. It never even really crossed my mind.

My freshmen year of college I didn't really do much on campus. I went to school, went to the library, maybe even went out on the weekends. But there was something missing from my life - a true college experience.

At the end of my Freshmen year I started to become interested in campus politics. I began to poke around and see what kinds of people and opportunities were out there. As I dug deeper and deeper and became more familiar with the landscape of the campus community, one thing was clear: the members of the [g] movement were the most active, motivated, loyal, successful and compelling members of the campus community.

So I decided to do something about it. At the beginning of my sophomore year I decided to rush a fraternity. After the funnest two weeks of my life, I ended up joining SigEp... and the rest is history!

That's my [g] movement story, what could your's be?

Why join the movement?

The [g] movement is here. Joining a Greek house can change your life forever…

Academic Enrichment

Fraternities and sororities provide their members with support and an atmosphere that fosters the academic success and individual scholarship. Greeks encourage each of their members in their studies through offering study halls and study tables, establishing minimum academic standards for membership, and providing honors and recognition for outstanding achievements.

The All Greek Grade Point Average for Spring 2007 was a 2.918. The all undergraduate Grade Point Average for Spring 2007 was a 2.903.

Leadership

All Greek organizations offer members direct exposure to the development of leadership skills. Each chapter provides a variety of leadership positions for its members. The Greek community also provides campus-level leadership experience and serves as a stepping stone to other campus leadership opportunities and activities.

There are over 200 leadership positions available within the Greek community.

Friendship

The fraternities and sororities play an exceedingly active role in various campus annual events such as, Homecoming, Mackay Week, and other events sponsored by the ASUN programming board (Flipside Productions). Getting involved in campus life can prove to be a valuable experience and may develop friendships that last a lifetime. Fraternities and Sororities offer their members a variety of social and recreational activities each year. The fraternities and sororities actively participate in the campus intramural sports program, and are very successful in sports tournaments.

Community Service & Philanthropy

Each Greek Chapter, as well as the Panhellenic, Interfraternity, and Multicultural Greek Councils, sponsor community service and philanthropic activities through participating in campus, local, and national philanthropic events. The chapter members may also have personal and group community service projects.

On average, Greek members donate 23 service hours per year per member.

Each Greek Chapter, as well as the Panhellenic, Interfraternity, and Multicultural Greek Councils, sponsor community service and philanthropic activities through participating in campus, local, and national philanthropic events. The chapter members may also have personal and group community service projects.

In 2007, UNR Greeks donated over $50,000 to community organizations and volunteers for more than 4200 hours.

Socials & Formals

Each Greek organization holds social exchanges with other associates within the Greek community. These events allow members an opportunity to meet other members within the community. Socials can include any number of events including, formals, dances, costume parties, athletic competitions, and University designated events.

Intramural's

The intramural office offers a fraternity league and sorority league. Chapters compete in dozens of sports from Ping-Pong to Flag Football. Each season is held from the beginning of the fall semester to the end of the spring semester . At the end of the season, fraternities and sororities each compete for the rights to be the intramural champion for that year.
